C.O.C.A Style Designers: SonyaRenee Jewelry

About SonyaRenee

Sonyarenée Jewelry is a line of simple and elegant pieces designed specifically to be incorporated into your everyday wardrobe.

Sonyarenée jewelry was created in 2002 by Gina Renée Peranio & Desiree Sonya Taylor who combined their middle names to form the entity, sonyarenée L.L.C. Desiree & Gina first became friends in high school on the volleyball and basketball court... they also shared a passion for creating things. Desiree attended college at Oklahoma University where she played as a scholarship athlete on the women’s basketball team and obtained her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering. In 2004 Gina became sonyarenée’s sole owner.

Gina has been creating jewelry for herself and others since 1995 when she took a class on Macramé and started selling hemp jewelry to her high school peers. She continued as an entrepreneur throughout college while getting her Bachelors degree in Public Relations & Marketing from Texas Tech University. While attending Tech initially on a soccer scholarship, Gina maintained a small business and sold jewelry to fellow students.

After graduating from Texas Tech in 2001 Gina entered the business world and still maintained her passion for jewelry as a side business. After working in commercial real estate for several years in Downtown Dallas, Gina realized her true passion for jewelry design and began to focus more time on expanding her emerging line. In January 2007 Gina went to New York to participate in her first major trade show. Finding success, she was able to leave the corporate world and devote 100% of her time and energy to sonyarenée Jewelry.

In 2006 Gina married her lucky husband Chris and they obsess over their dogs Willie & Magnolia. Gina feels very fortunate and excited to be living her dream and continues to experience rapid growth and success.

C.O.C.A Style Designers: GLAMHUER Clothing

I'm sure you remember Ashley S. Drapes, the eclectic jewelry designer I posted about months ago, right?

If not, well get re-acquainted. Ashley is one-half of the 80's Glam-inspired clothing line, GLAMHUER. The duo designers/bosom buddies, Ashley & Brooke Reid aka B. Glynn are giving the Windy City a raw/uncut glimpse of what it means to take charge of your dreams.

After meeting the girls a mere two years ago - one look at their "free spirit" attitudes and next, Glamhuer, all I could think of was the song, Sex Shooter; Appollonia 6; Vanity; and The Sex Kittens of the 1980s era ... I was intrigued! Glamhuer defines the sensual curves of a woman and hones in on a time when women wore clothes in a tasteful manner, yet exuded sexy and playfulness in form-fitting dresses, corsets, belted waists, colorful patterns, lace, ruffles and flirty pantyhose ... Read more about Glamhuer below.

While studying at AI (The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago) we met during a fashion course and immediately bonded! We started shopping at thrift stores and fell in love with vintage glam. We kept that concept in mind and began to create garments with that same old school vibe with a modern eclectic twist. We started reconstructing garments and people were like “that’s haute where did you guys get that” we figured why not make all our own clothes and start a line.

That’s when Glamhuer™ was born. We wanted exposure for our line so we approached a close friend for an opportunity to throw our own fashion show to launch Glamhuer™. We gave him the plan and he gave us just two weeks to pull it all together. We accepted and quickly got to work. With limited help, we pulled it off, out of all the craziness Urban Ja’dore was a success!

C.O.C.A Style Designers: Vintage Royalty by Meena Osei

Created in 2008 by Meena Osei-
Kuffour (shown on right)
, VINTAGE ROYALTY specializes in earrings made of exclusive paper. Pondering the idea for quite a while, Meena says the earrings are made of paper with a vintage twist. "The idea of these earrings came to me over 4 years ago and I've finally decided on a consistent look for them," explained Meena. "The original earrings I made were inspired while working at my school's art gallery. I met an art student who had some cool paper from Japan and used it for other projects. I thought to myself, what else can you do with paper?"

According to Meena, she was so thrilled by the idea of the paper she immediately headed to the nearest fabric and paper stores. "I began experimenting with huge dangling earrings that were double-sided, but I didn’t receive a huge response from them so I went back to the drawing board," Meena says.

To her surprise, it was a friend and her thift store earrings, which gave Meena inspiration to continue designing. "My friend had on a pair of earrings from the thrift store that were huge and plastic and were the tackiest things you have ever seen. I loved them!!! Once I saw those I came back home and knew the direction I needed to go into," said Meena.

Now her VINTAGE ROYALTY jewelry direction is bold and bright, colorful and designed for indies who want to make a statement. When asked which avenue of inspiration she takes, Meena had this to say: They're always changing and I am currently looking into other mediums to mix with the paper. Other influences that I’ve included are different prints, paintings, inspirations from Marc Jacobs jewelry, and the people around me.

Want to know what's happening with VINTAGE ROYALTY by Meena? She's been lending her style creds in Newcity's latest Boutiqueville issue, her earrings will be sold through EmergingThoughts.com and I she plans on participating in more fashion shows and photo shoots.
