Monday Morning Art: Jamel Shabazz
Pictures have a way of freezing time, and no one takes better freeze shots of urban style than Jamel Shabazz. Shabazz, born in 1960 is a photographer, artist and activist from Brooklyn, NY. As a hip young cat in the '80s, he strolled the streets of New York, snapping photos of B-boys and B-girls who took pride in striking classic poses and showing off their fresh threads. Keepin' it COCA in Adidas, Puma, and Kangol gear, these trendsetters spawned a nonchalant cool that continues to inform the world of hip-hop's true essence of style. Though occasionally referencing drugs and violence that plagued urban America during the particular decade, Shabazz always presents portraits that's utterly drenched in love, joy, and community.
