International Swagger: Duro Olowu
As a native son of Lagos, Nigeria, Duro Olowu began studying to be a lawyer before he was discovered as the fashion industry's 'next designer to watch' candidate. Residing in London, Olowu's rich background (his father is Nigerian, his mother Jamaican) definitely reflects his designs of beautiful frocks in wild African batik prints, and unapologetic hues, in which many are courtesy of vintage couture fabrics.
They say, when you're a genius, you don't have to boast about it because your work speaks for itself - with that said, one of Olowu's infamous dresses (a high wasted patchwork Boho-inspired dress) caught the attention of a Vogue editor, which coined him New Designer of the Year at the 2005 British Fashion Awards.
