The Evolution of the Cloche




Let's go back to the 1920s aka The Harlem Renaissance, The Year of the Flapper, red lipstick, drop waist dresses, women smoking cigarettes in night clubs, CoCo Chanel, the bobbed hairstyle and one of the most popular hats of that era - the cloche.

According to some fashion historians, the cloche was a sign of "bad posture" and the observation of a "woman's short hairstyle." Cloche meaning bell in French is said to be the evolution from a looser fitting, larger brimmed variety of the Edwardian period. Opposed to it's snug fit the cloche was intended for bobbed haired women of the '20s to be styled low on the brow closely covering the eyes.
