Monday Morning Art: Nina Chanel Abney

Nina Chanel Abney is not your typical 26-year-old artist. Looking at her work with a naked eye, you probably wouldn't notice the subliminal messages.

For example, her senior thesis was titled ‘Class of 2007,' which she “portrayed her classmates with black skin and sporting orange jumpsuits - herself - the only African American in the group, with white skin, wearing a prison guard uniform. When she uses rubber gloves it implies someone has done some "dirty work."

She was one of the youngest students in her M.F.A. program and had never set foot inside a gallery, but that didn't stop her from following her dream. This former assembly line worker turn artist from "Da CHI" is definitely worth some of your wall space.
